Clusters of 2-4 star-shaped galls on the buds of Quercus rubra in spring. Each gall had 6-7 flat yellow wings sweeping up to a slightly curled point tinged with red. The galls were uneven crusted with a red material but otherwise hairless and smooth. Observed in NY in May.
