Large, very irregularly globular, nearly lobed, leaf galls attached broadly to the lower sides of leaves of Rhus trilobata. The galls are sparsely covered in short hairs and range from light yellow-pink to bright candy-red. They sometimes occupy nearly the entirety of host leaves. Observed as early as May, persisting into July, in Utah, Arizona, Idaho, and nearby states.
Observations outside of iNaturalist (see link below) can be found on BugGuide and on Flickr. Some observations currently identified as Aculops rhois within the US southwest likely belong to this species.
