At this point it is not completely clear how to distinguish this gall from Russo's <a href="https://www.gallformers.org/gall/2609">Unknown #48</a>. Based on the photos and descriptions in Russo 2021, Unknown #56 is distinctive in the way that it folds the host leaf, which Unknown #48 apparently does not do. Also, based on the photos, it seems that the gall of Unknown #48 occurs mostly on the ventral surface of leaves without much (or any?) part of the gall showing on the dorsal side. Based on iNat photos and Russo's description Unknown #56 seems to show on both the dorsal and ventral surface of the leaves. Based on iNaturalist observations of galls on Quercus turbinella showing these characteristics, Quercus turbinella is added as a host for this gall.
