Ceanothus Leaf Pouch Gall

Spring gall occurring on the leaves of Wart-stemmed Ceanothus. Fresh galls are green and cause the leaves to swell slightly and fold inward, eventually sealing off where the leaf margins come together, forming the shape of a coin purse or pouch. As the gall develops, the bottom begins to turn dark reddish-brown.

Galls of this species were collected in San Diego, CA. Reared adults emerged in May and were examined by Raymond Gagné who confirmed the presence of both males and females.

Host:
Ceanothus verrucosus
