Gallformers ID Notes

Abrupt swelling near the terminal end of Sphaeralcea stems. Several buds are sometimes present on the gall surface; it is unclear whether the buds were there prior to gall formation. Two leaves were emerging at the apex of the gall on a few specimens that were photographed. An observation of this gall on Bugguide had adult Cecidomyiid midges reared, implying that they are the gallformers. Observed in Mexico and throughout the Southwestern United States.
