These galls are deformed and occasionally swollen fruit on tree cholla. The galls are characterized by red, overlapping bracts growing from the apex of the fruit, which in ungalled fruits is concave and hollow. Galled fruits are often swollen but sometimes the shape is similar to normal fruits. However, the red bracts at the tip of the fruits are always present. The exit holes are often surrounded by white scarring on the fruit surface. Almost all galled fruits seen in early May had pupal exuviae protruding.
