Gallformers ID Notes

Abrupt stem swellings found on Malacothamnus densiflorus in California. A very similar gall was found on Malacothamnus fasciculatus, also in California, and is presumed to be induced by the same species. The galls are covered externally by very small, stellate hair clusters, the same as are found on normal stems of the host plant. The gall on M. fasciculatus was cross-sectioned, and inside at least six Cecidomyiid larvae were visible. The walls of the gall were green and appear succulent. The elongate larval chamber was filled with white material, possibly a fungus.
