Gallformers ID Notes

An unknown stem swelling on Artemisia californica (California Sagebrush). The gall resembles the Mordellid stem swelling recently discovered on Artemisia vulgaris in the northeastern US, but differs in its tendency not to be found at nodes, its spongy texture as if extruding between straps of epidermal tissue, and its more irregular size and shape. Cross sections reveal thick walls and an indeterminate insect larva present within. Observed primarily in Los Angeles; one observation in San Jose may be distinct.
