Cecidomyia pudibunda n. sp.

Fold on the leaf of the hornbeam (Carpinus americana), tinged with red on the outside. It is generally situated between two of the side ribs, and runs, therefore, obliquely towards the central rib. Inside of this fold I found, on the 15th of June, exceedingly small whitish larva ; when magnified they appeared semi-transparent, with an orange spot about the middle of the body, and with numerous short, erect bristles ; the head is distinct, as well as two short antennae; although I did not perceive the breast-bone, I have no doubt, from the appearance of these larvae, that they belong to this genus.

Cecidomyia pudibunda

Gall.-- Consists of a fold between the ribs on the leaf of hornbea (Carpinus caroliniana) with the opening on the underside of the leaf. It is usually red above and pale green beneath. In length the galls vary from 4 mm to the width of the leaf from the midrib to the margin. Usually several or many galls are found upon a single leaf. Formed in June and the larva leaves the gall to pupate on the ground. The adult appears in July.
