The plant-feeding gall midges of North America

Enlarged, sterile fruitlet

Infested fruit grow more quickly than normal until about 1cm long at which time the yellowish, gregarious larvae inside are full-grown and drop to the ground.

This is an immigrant from Europe, first discovered in North America in 1877 on introduced stock in Connecticut.

Distr: widespread in northeastern United States and eastern Canada.
