Gallformers ID Notes

A red, hairless pip gall on first-year acorns of Quercus rubra in the fall, secreting honeydew which attracted ants. Globular in shape, narrowing to a small conical apex, differing from Callirhytis balanacea but similar to several described pip-gall-inducers on red-group oaks not known from this host. Cf Callirhytis balanopsis, but possibly undescribed. Observed in New York in October.
