The plant-feeding gall midges of North America

"Enlarged Stem Bud

Buds fail to elongate normally in early spring, and develop into a leafy growth about 1cm in length and diameter. The active larvae live in bulbetlike galls and grow very slowly. They remain in the first instar through early July, when the outer leaves of the buds turn brown and rough. Larvae enter the second instar in about mid-August and the third toward the end of September. In Spring they form a cocoon in which they pupate.
