Gallformers ID Notes

These galls are characterized by greatly enlarged and swollen sheaths at the base of Pinus edulis needles. Both needles in the galled fascicle are significantly stunted in growth and die much sooner than healthy needles, likely after the adult midges exit the gall. One dissected gall revealed two Cecidomyiid larvae inside the swollen sheath. Galls have been found in Colorado and New Mexico.
