GALL
numerous, less than a mm wide, semiglobular shiny pustules, mainly at the underside of low leaves, c. 200-350 µm. Galls formed in summer, containing sporangia, are orange to golden orange. Galls formed in autumn contain resting sporangia and are reddish- to chestnut-brown.

<bold>Problem: Two similar species on same plant </bold>

Cook apparently found a second species of Synchytrium on Stellaria media, which he named Synchytrium chiltonii. It is discussed in Melville T. Cook. Species of Synchytrium in Louisiana I: Descriptions of Species Found in the Vicinity of Baton Rouge. Mycologia 37(3) 284-294 (1945). 

Index Fungorum lists both S. stellariae and S. chiltonii as valid and does not consider them synonyms.
