Gallformers ID Notes

An elongate conical gall growing in a leaf axil of Quercus chrysolepis, presumably originating as a modified bud. Fresh galls observed in September are purple with linear white streaks aligned from base to tip, covered sparsely in a mealy coating. A gall with a single emergence hole at the base was observed in April. Structurally these galls bear some resemblance to Heteroecus melanoderma and Heteroecus dasydactyli when their hairs are removed, but are substantially thinner and show no evidence of having ever had hairs even when apparently fresh. It is possible that this gall form is an inquiline-induced modification of one of those two species.
