Asphondylia (asteris) recondita, n. sp.
Deformed terminal buds on the principal and the lateral branches of Aster patens. These galls consist merely in an arrest of growth and consequent accumulation of leaves, forming a bud-like body up to 10 or 15 m. m. in length. Inside I found pupae which their structure proves to be those of Asphondylia...did not succeed in rearing the fly.

Gall... — An accumulation of aborted leaves, forming a rosette-like body, measuring from 10 to 20 mm. in length. In the center it is bud-like, and inhabited by a single larva. The gall is formed on the tips of branches of a tall, pale, purple-flowered aster (Aster patens) and is caused by the arrest of growth of the terminal buds...
The gall is quite common during the latter part of August. The larva pupates in the bud-like chamber and the adult emerges in September.

Asphondylia recondita is a multivoltine species, which produces a leafy apical gall in the stem apices of Symphyotrichum patens (Aiton), one larva develops per gall. The spring crown gall develops at the base of the host plant the following May.

Galls are 10-20 mm long and occur at the tips of branches. The single larval cell is at the center of the gall. Adults emerge from the gall in summer. Hosts: A. novaeangliae, A. patens, A. paternus
