The ocellate maple leaf gall (fig. 130) is believed to be caused by Itonida ocellaris (O. S.), although there is no positive record of its rearing. The gall or spot, which measures about 3 to 4 mm. in diameter, is yellow and has a red center and margin. The larva of I. ocellaris is nearly transparent and lives in an exposed position on the leaf. When full grown, about the latter part of September, the larva drops to the ground, where it spins a crude cocoon in which it pupates. The species is widely distributed but rarely, if ever, injurious.

Ocellate, yellow, red-margined blister leaf gall, diameter 3 to 4 mm.

This gall midge produces a reddish, leaf blister on the leaves of Acer rubrum. Galls are common in Allegheny County.

Acericecis ocellaris

Hosts: Chiefly Acer rubrum; also A pensylvanicum, saccharinum, saccharum, spicatum; typical spots occur on A circinatum from OR and WA but larvae of the gall midge have not been reported.

Circular, usually red, leaf spot, each with one exposed larva on under side of leaf

Spots are about 5 mm in diameter, usually red, but sometimes green or yellow, and evident in spring as soon as leaves are fully expanded.
